Richard Cassell, Dramatic Baritone
Richard Cassell, International Dramatic Baritone, will debut his first title role in Rigoletto with Opera Seabrook. Mr. Cassell also performs as a superb character actor internationally, appearing in over 50 supporting roles for Cleveland Opera, Natchez Opera Festival, Chattanooga Opera, Singapore Opera, Macao Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, Grand Opera of Maine, Berkshire Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival and many others. Specializing in Verdi and Puccini, his most recent debut of Iago in the Taconic Opera's Otello rendered him a review “with overpowering singing & acting”. His Giorgio Germont with Opera of the Hamptons and His performance of the title role in Falstaff with The New Opera Festival of Rome were equally riveting. Richard Cassell created the role of Cipolla the Magician in Thorne's Mario and the Magician , based on a story by Thomas Mann & produced for The Center for Contemporary Opera (Albany Records, 2007). The result was The New York Times headline: "Audience Caught Under the Spell of Mann's Musical Magician." Richard also premiered the role of Frank in Richard Foreman and Stanley Silverman's Elephant Steps at The Tanglewood Music Festival under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. During his earlier career performing as a Bass-Baritone, Richard Cassell performed such roles as Escamillo in Carmen on BBC-TV, Leporello in Don Giovanni - RAI-TV(Rome), Alberich in Das Rheingold with Bangkok Opera, Dappertutto in Les Contes d'Hoffman with State Opera of New Jersey, the title role in Gianni Schicchi and Scarpia in Tosca for The Silesian State Opera (Czech Republic). A regular with France 's Albert Roussel Festival, he will soon perform the role of Alaouddin in Roussel's Padmavati and record a series of CD's for the Albert Roussel Foundation. Mr. Cassell's decision to move into the Dramatic Baritone repertoire is clearly a gift to the opera world – given his superb acting and stage ability.
